On Friday, August 18, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Ukraine for 18 months, from October 20, 2023, through April 19, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis requires that the United States continue to offer safety and protection to Ukrainians who may not be able to return to their country,”.

Background:
The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country’s nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately. USCIS may grant TPS to eligible nationals of certain countries (or parts of countries), who are already in the United States. Eligible individuals without nationality who last resided in the designated country may also be granted TPS.
