On Friday, August 18, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Ukraine for 18 months, from October 20, 2023, through April 19, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis requires that the United States continue to offer safety and protection to Ukrainians who may not be able to return to their country,”.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced cancellation of the Trump Administration’s Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Designations for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua. This decision now extends TPS designations for 18 Months for current beneficiaries only!

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published a notice in the Federal Register extending and redesignating Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 more months, from 3/18/23 through 9/17/24. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and the continuing humanitarian crisis,”.

On Thursday, January 12, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Somalia for 18 months. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and the continuing humanitarian crisis,”.

Background:

On Monday, December 5, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending and redesignating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Haiti for 18 months, from February 4, 2023, until August 3, 2024. This designation of TPS is based upon ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Haiti making return un-safe. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “The conditions in Haiti, including socioeconomic challenges, political instability, and gang violence and crime – aggravated by environmental disaster – compelled the humanitarian relief we are providing today.”

Background: 

On Monday, October 21st, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported the designation of Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since October 20, 2022. 

Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Ethiopian nationals currently residing in the U.S. who cannot safely return due to conflict-related violence and a humanitarian crisis involving severe food shortages, flooding, drought, and displacement, will be able to remain and work in the United States until conditions in their home country improve.”

On Monday, September 26, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Burma for 18 months. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “The people of Burma are continuing to suffer a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis due to a military coup, upheaval, and security forces’ brutal violence against civilians,”.

On Monday, July 11, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Venezuela for 18 months. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “After careful consideration, and in consultation with the Secretary of State, today I am extending that designation. This action is one of many ways the Biden administration is providing humanitarian support to Venezuelans at home and abroad, together with our regional partners. We will continue to work with our international partners to address the challenges of regional migration while ensuring our borders remain secure.”

Background: 

The Department of Homeland Security published a notice in the Federal Register that they were designating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Cameroon for 18 months. This designation of TPS is based upon extreme violence perpetrated by government forces and armed separatists, and a rise in attacks led by Boko Haram in Cameroon making return un-safe. The Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced the 18-month designation of Cameroon for TPS in April.
