On Friday, October 6, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Cameroon for 18 months, beginning on December 8, 2023 and ending on June 7, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “The United States will continue to offer safety and protection to Cameroonian nationals who are currently unable to safely return home due to ongoing armed conflict, and extraordinary and temporary conditions including human rights abuses,”

Background:

On Thursday, September 20, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Venezuela for 18 months, beginning on March 11, 2024 and ending on September 10, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “That is the situation that Venezuelans who arrived here on or before July 31 of this year find themselves in. We are accordingly granting them the protection that the law provides. However, it is critical that Venezuelans understand that those who have arrived here after July 31, 2023 are not eligible for such protection, and instead will be removed when they are found to not have a legal basis to stay.”

On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Afghanistan for 18 months, from November 21, 2023, through May 20, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Today’s announcement to extend and redesignate TPS for Afghanistan allows us to continue to offer safety and protection to Afghan nationals who are unable to return to their country,”.

Background:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced-on Friday, September the 8th that they were extending the re-registration period for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from 60 days to 18 months for several countries. The countries included in the TPS extension are El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan. On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of South Sudan for 18 months, from November 4, 2023, through May 3, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of South Sudan for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will continue to offer safety and protection to South Sudanese nationals who may not be able to return to their country due to the ongoing armed conflict and humanitarian crisis,”.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced cancellation of the Trump Administration’s Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Designations for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua. This decision now extends TPS designations for 18 Months for current beneficiaries only!

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published a notice in the Federal Register extending and redesignating Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 more months, from 3/18/23 through 9/17/24. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and the continuing humanitarian crisis,”.
